When Narendra Modi, thePrime Minster of India, made the now-famous remarks aboutIndian Muslims being “patriot-ic” and “immune to al-Qaedah”, he was speakingmore to his American audience than Indians. Denied visa for a long time, heneeded to convince Americans that his viewsabout Muslims in India are not what have beenprojected in the American media. But hisremarks have led to a curious new debate. ManyIndian writers including Muslims, who find aplace in the mainstream media, have tried toexplain the non-radicalisation of Muslims on var-ious grounds. Some of these grounds may be true, but the bigger truth is that these analystsare discussing the issue based on the Westernmindset and their theories of violence. They are talking of Indian Muslims not getting “radi-calised” as if the whole of the rest of the MuslimWorld is radicalised. The truth on the contrary is that even from Western point of view, whichviews violence bad only if it is targeted against the West, the overwhelming majority of theMuslim countries and the overwhelming globalMuslim population have not engaged in violencedespite severe provocations from the forces of the globalisation led by the West. Out of more than 50 Muslim countries, “terrorism”, the kindof violence West loathes, has affected less thana dozen countries, 5-6 in a major way.Indonesia, Malaysia, the erstwhile Soviet Unioncountries like Azerbaijan, and Uzbekistan,Turkey, Bangladesh, Indonesia, and many other countries have none or a few incidents of terror-ism. Much bigger kinds of terrorism has beenwitnessed by Sri Lanka in the last three decades, and Indian terrorism is mainly a non-Muslimphenomenon involving Naxalites, Ulfa, Bodos,Sikhs, Tamils and Maoists, most of them beingborn as Hindus. It can be easily seen that terrorism in Muslimcountries is born out of anger against the West, which has continuously tried to keep its puppetsin power in those countries against the wishes of the people. Terrorism has obviously been direct-ly proportional to the Western meddling andinvolvement. This is true about Afghanistan,Pakistan and Most Arab countries. Moreover, all the major “terrorist outfits” have been friends of the West in the past. Al-Qaedah was a closefriend when it was fighting the Russians alongwith Talibans. ISIS too was a friend while it wasfighting the Syrian government. Wherefrom didISIS get its heavy weaponry? Of course, most ofit came from West or Western allies in theregion. If even now, America is not launching afull-fledged onslaught on ISIS, it is simplybecause ISIS is expected to put pressure on theSyrian regime. Till Syrian regime does not wiltunder ISIS pressure, ISIS will remain a friendlyenemy. If Indian Muslims have not radicalised, it ischiefly because India has remained free ofWestern intervention, and Indian polity, despiteits recurrent communal ups and downs, haslargely remained plural in nature. If IndianMuslims ever get radicalised, it will be due toIndian issues and not the ones that interestWest. If, however, West succeeds in pulling Indiainto its own wars, which Obama tried during his talks with the Indian Premier, India may also go the Afghanistan or Iraq way. But Indian Muslimsare confident that sanity will continue to prevailin Indian polity, and India will not join theWestern aggression against Muslim countries.India recognises it well that in the long-runMuslim countries, with their enormous wealthand population, can be of greater economicinterest to India. I have been incessantly arguing the fact thatWest’s categorisation of violence has nothing todo with the magnitude of the violence. Only thekinds of violence that are targeted againstWestern interests are condemnable in its view.Where violence is targeted against the enemiesof West, the terminology immediately changes. It then becomes either a “war against terror” or a“rebellion against an oppressive regime”. The Muslim writers in the Western mediaare of course over-awed by the Western ideolo-gies. Many of them are part of their plans.Instead of asking questions to West, they are

We’re violent& barbaric

Are we non-violent? No. Our ostensible non-violence is a hogwash. It’s indeed ironic that this country which gave apostles of peace likeGautam Buddha, Mahavir and Gandhi also witnessed blood-cur-dling acts of violence. The three Cs: Caste, Class & Creed havealways flared up our emotions and we’ve acted so violently that anindifferent observer will forever wonder, whether we’ve ever beenpeace-loving? The so-called pacifist Hindus massacred followers ofJainism and Buddhism nearly a millennium ago when they (follow-ers of Hinduism) felt that these two religions might engulf Hinduism. The Adi Shankara would invite the Jain and Buddhist scholars for religious discourses with a clear condition that whoever would lose, would have to immolate himself. The astoundingly brilliant andshrewd Shankara wouldn’t let anyone else win and he’d eventuallydefeat all. The poor Jain and Buddhist scholars would then jumpinto fire and kill themselves. Wasn’t it an act of barbarism? The violent physical and mental torture made the oppressed class-es of India embrace other religions. We condemn Hitler’s Nazis for  their morbid decision to expunge the existence of the Jews during the Second World War, but we conveniently forget what happenedduring partition. Wasn’t that death’s dance macabre when infantswere getting tossed into fire and women were being ravaged on theroads by Muslims, Hindus and Sikhs? No one lagged behind andin that free for all worth-condemning episode in the shared historyof the sub-continent. Everyone behaved like a person possessed.Whether it was the Gujarat pogrom in 2002 or the recent riots in UP,we’ve always evinced our violent side without any attempt to hideit. It’s indeed a misnomer that we’re non-violent. We’re not. We’reextremely barbaric, violent and blood-thirsty and this is the reality,we cannot turn a Nelson’s eye to.

Modi: A Political Sorcerer

People (read unctuous and grovelling Hindus) of India seem to beblinded and bedazzled by Modi’s so-called charisma. Modi is a reli-giously polarised leader and if such a monomaniac personbecomes the PM of India, the overall state of affairs will only wors-en. It’s really dangerous as well as inimical to India’s ostensiblysecular image that this exceedingly fanatic man is being projectedas the future PM of India. Modi is targeting the youngsters in theage group of 18-24, who are going to be the first-time voters. Howcan this Facebook and smart phone generation decide and under-stand the deeper implications and ramifications, if Modi is anoint-ed as the next PM? A leader ought to have an all-encompassingvision sans any vile, viciousness and vendetta. Can Modi ever exonerate himself of his dubious role in Gujarat pogrom that hap-pened in 2002? Those, who are eulogising Modi, aren’t aware of the ground realities. They are under the spell of a political sorcerer,Narendra Modi. They must exercise their grey cells before making this man the next PM of the biggest democracy. Remember, all thatglitters is not gold.

Doubting Ram and Ramayana

This refers to ‘Hindu ‘saint’ offer to give Rs. 5 lakh to anyone whospits on Jethmalani’s face, no media outrage’ (MG, 16-31December). Just because Ram Jethmalani called Ram ‘a bad hus-band’, there’s so much furore in the Hindu community and evendiaspora in all parts of the world. Before a Hindu condemns Ram Jethmalani for hurting his/her religious beliefs, it must be prudent to know that Ram of Hindus isa mythical figure. A few years back, the Supreme Court categorical-ly stated that Ram didn’t exist in flesh and blood. He does exist incollective faith and conscience of Hindus. So the very question ofRam being a good or bad husband holds no water. Even if weaccept Ram’s existence according to Valmiki’s Ramayana, writtenroughly 5000 years ago (Mahabharat happened approximately3,500 years back), the ‘Adi Kavi’s’ (Hindus’ sobriquet for Valmiki as the ‘earliest (adi) poet’) ‘Ramayana’ has stylistical and linguistic dis-
